Hbase installation on ubuntu
In this tutorial we will see how to install Hbase on ubuntu 16.04 by doing the following steps
Step 1: Before installing Hbase, you need to First ensure that java8 is installed:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer |
Verify that java is correctly installed:

java -version |
Configuring Java Environment

sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-set-default |
Step 2: Ensure that hadoop installation was successful on your machine
Check this link for installation
Step 3: Download Apache Hbase
- Go to downloads page
- Choose hbase file: hbase-1.2.5-bin.tar.gz
Step 4: Complete the installation process
- Move the downloaded file “hbase-1.2.5-bin.tar.gz” to your home (~)
- Compress it :
1tar -zxvf hbase-1.2.5-bin.tar.gz - Edit hbase-env.sh using this command lines:
12cd /usr/local/hbase/confgedit hbase-env.sh - Add this line:
1export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-oracle - Edit hbase-site.xml using this command lines:
12cd /usr/local/hbase/confgedit hbase-site.xml - Add this lines:
1234567891011121314151617<configuration>//Here you have to set the path where you want HBase to store its files.<property><name>hbase.rootdir</name><value>hdfs://localhost:9000/hbase</value></property>//Here you have to set the path where you want HBase to store its built in zookeeper files.<property><name>hbase.zookeeper.property.dataDir</name><value>/home/hadoopworkshop/zookeeper</value></property><property><name>hbase.cluster.distributed</name><value>true</value></property></configuration> - Edit bashrc using this command line:
12cdsudo gedit .bashrc - Add this lines:
1234# - HBASE ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES START -#export HBASE_HOME=/usr/local/hbaseexport PATH=$PATH:$HBASE_HOME/bin# - HBASE ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES END -# - Execute bashrc:
1. ~/.bashrc
Step 5: Start hbase processes
- Start hadoop process first:
12start-hdfs.shstart-yarn.sh - Start hbase:
1start-hbase.sh
Step 6: Stop hbase processes
- Stop hbase:
1stop-hbase.sh - Stop hadoop process:
12stop-dfs.shstop-yarn.sh

This is a very helpful tutorial. I was just wondering though, to start the Hadoop process, isn’t the command ”start-dfs.sh”, rather than “start-hdfs.sh”?
